I've been trying to think of what to say today for a little while now, but for those of you that have been wanting a current update about Martin's progress, this post is for you. It's also for those of you that have been asking for a long long time about a place where you could possibly help out our family financially.

Last week a sweet friend of mine started a YouCaring fundraiser for our family, and I've already been overwhelmed with the tender messages and memories that have been passed around with it, not to mention the kindness and love from so many people who have already contributed and/or shared the fund. Every dollar makes such a difference. That being said, please don't feel any pressure to help this way or even share for that matter. I already feel so so blessed at the many thousands of prayers and healing vibes, messages, and services that have been offered up on our behalf. Each one of those makes a difference too:)

As far as how he's doing, you can watch a very extensive update that I shared about 10 days ago on Periscope HERE, but since that time some more complications have arisen that have his doctors very concerned. They instructed me to take him to the ER yesterday in hopes of relieving some of the pressure in his abdomen from the growing tumors, but were told that there was nothing they could do for him.

My sweetheart is so so sick, and every day his fight gets harder and harder. Nothing could have prepared me for this, and it crushes all of us to see his body change and weaken, and his mind so confused. But even through the pain in his eyes, I can still see this strong and brave man that I love more than anything.

We have tickets to return to the hospital in Houston, TX next week for more scans and tests, as well as another round of his immunotherapy treatment if all goes as planned. In the meantime, we are doing everything we can to keep him nourished and resting, and praying for him to keep strong and hopeful.

Thank you again and again for so much continued support and encouragement. We're incredibly blessed to have such a huge and loving group of friends.

xoxo,

  2. Oh Emily... you don't know me and I don't know you, but I started following your blog long before Martin's cancer, mom to mom. Now I watch and follow you on this journey you and your family are on. I lost my brother 3 years ago (liver failure), and even though I can't imagine what it must be like for you to see your husband, the father of your beautiful children, so ill, I feel your pain. I pray for Martin to heal soon and for your family to find peace in this illness. Thank you for sharing this difficult time with all the many of us who care about you all. xx

  4. I lost my uncle two days ago, after his thirteen year battle against cancer (he was originally told three months). Don't lose hope, Emily. Don't give up, don't let Martin give up or lose hope. Amazing things can happen. I'll be thinking of you and sending great thoughts for Martin out into the world. Stay positive. Your family is in many hearts.

  5. My mom is a 29 year survivor of stage 4 Leukemia and 4 year survivor of breast cancer. I asked her if there is anything I could say to help you and your family and she said to just be here for you. So know that you have all the support in the world from this community. Keeping you in my prayers.

  6. Hey Emily,

I've been following your story for a while and am just so sorry you have to deal with this, but you're showing so much strength. I saw that you said you guys were going back to Houston soon, and I just wanted to let you know that I am in Houston, and actually work at MD Anderson, so if you guys need anything please feel free to message me. Even if it's just to go sit and have a cup of coffee or something. I know this is all really stressful, so please don't hesitate to message me if I can do anything to help make your stay easier. brandihendrix@gmail.com

  11. Hi Emily. I can honestly say I understand what you are going through. My sweetheart has stage 4 melanoma that seems to have begun the same way. We found a lump under his left armpit shortly after the birth of our third child. He had all nodes removed and we were hopeful that was the end. Very shortly after that his scans showed several spots on his lungs, hip, femur and the monster we can see, in a muscle in his back. We too have tried the same optivo/yervoy combo your sweetheart is doing now, saw great results at first but the darn cancer adapted and started growing rapidly once again. He has been on a three drug combo that isn't FDA approved to be used together but we have seen amazing results. He gets an infusion every three weeks of kytruda and takes two chemo meds orally daily. I thought last October he had a few days left. I remember the sickening feeling of checking on him praying he was still breathing and dreading the time he wouldn't be. This combo has completely changed our life. He hasn't been on any pain meds and has been able to be up and playful and his appetite is back tenfold. I pray whatever you and Martin along with his doctors decide can give you a turn around as well. I know we aren't out of the woods yet but every day, every hour is a blessing and giving our kids as much time with their daddy's as possible is our to be top priority. Prayers of strength for you and your sweet family.

  12. Keeping Martin, yourself and your precious babies in my prayers. You are an incredibly strong woman, to be taking care of everyone and everything in your life in the midst of such challenge. I pray you find the strength and peace each day to care for and love on your family, to stand by Martin's side as he fights and even though he is not himself at the moment, that you feel deep in your heart his love and gratitude surround you and bolster you. Sending love from Alberta.

  24. Martin or Elder Meyers, as I know you best, I will always remember the way you compassionately spoke to everyone you met. Thanks for sharing your stash of Tylenol PM, and coming over late one night (clothes right out of the washer) to help me quickly pack and make a train. In all of my memories of you, you were pleasant and compassionate. You blessed us with your talents (even on a barely recognizable violin) and always lit up the room. It is nice to see that you have such a lovely family and such a great supportive wife, you deserve it!

    1. Sierra, this update is from 2016. I apologize if I'm mistaken, however it sounds as though you thought this update was a recent one. I'm sorry to say that Martin passed away not long after this update. God bless. <3
