10 Tips for Gorgeous, Healthier Hair (Part 1)

Hello Ladies! (and men if you're reading.lol) Forever I've received compliments on my hair from people asking: if it's real, what color I use, how I take care of it, and so forth. Especially lately, I've received a ton of emails and comments from you lovely ladies asking about how I've gotten my hair to grow so long and how I take care of it. Today I'm excited to share a few tips with you on "Gorgeous Hair Maintenance!"
#1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Can I just say that again? HYDRATE! I can't fully express that if you're not drinking enough water, you will have ugly hair. haha Our bodies are 98% water, and our hair is on the end of the list for receiving hydration. If you're not drinking enough, your body will take most of it and your hair gets what's left over. I see a visible difference also in the shine and smoothness of my hair when I've not been drinking enough. Carry water with you during the day and drink up! Try to go for a minimum of eight 'glasses' of water a day. Other hydration options: watermelon, cucumbers, skip the soda, skip the excess sodium. You'll see the difference I promise!

#2. Lets talk about harsh chemicals. I have never ever used any permanent dye on my hair. I've always loved the natural color and frankly was scared by all the crazy colored haystacks I saw on people's heads coming out of the salon (That being said I'm not a salon-a-phobe). I'm not saying never dye your hair, but just try to keep the trips to a minimum, and look into salon treatments for your hair if you do choose to dye it. Keep in mind that chemical treatments strongly damage hair fibers, resulting in a huge decrease in water content in your hair. That's what gives people that "fried" hair effect. That's no good. Maybe consider using color sprays or those weekend washout colors if you need a little change:) If you love to dye your hair, you'll need to take extra precautions to keep it healthy.

#3. Vitamins. Getting pregnant was the best thing that ever happened to my hair.haha Prenatal vitamins are used a lot by woman who aren't even pregnant! Sound funny? Believe it or not it's because they're so good for your nails and hair! No, really:) It's fine to take them when you're not pregnant and they'll not only nourish your hair but they have almost 100%  or more of the essential vitamins your body needs every day! Win-win! When in doubt about prego vitamins (or don't wanna scare your hubby), invest in a good multi-vitamin and this will help nourish your hair in the long run, and with regular intake you will see a difference in your hair's health and appearance. Again, promise:)

#4. Turn off the heat! The best thing I ever did was to stop using heat. Now I'm not talking about every kind of heat 24/7, but I haven't blow dried my hair with heat in years, and when I do use hot curlers or a crimper I try and make it as infrequent as possible. Why? Heat Kills Hair. Your hair is living, and it doesn't appreciate being burnt to a crisp any more than you would. Personally I try and shower before bed and bun it up to dry while I sleep, and most of my hair styles can be achieved without heat. It is possible ladies! and your hair will thank you for it. Trust me. You may want to look into a blow dryer that uses cool or even warm air instead of hot. I understand that some hairstyles have to use heat, but maybe consider taking those out of your daily routine and saving them for those hot dates:)

#5. Good Product. As soon as I ditched the 99 cent bottle hair shampoo at the drugstore I was already making the biggest step towards healthier and longer hair. Your hair products (aka shampoo and conditioner:)) are two of the biggest ways to pump extra nutrients into your hair every time you shower or bathe. Why not give it something healthy to absorb instead of a second rate product? I'm not saying that you need to get the most expensive hair products from salon stores, but please do a little research and upgrade to a superior brand. Even well marketed/seemingly effective products are full of synthetic compounds that produce multiple negative effects for your hair. I promise, promise that it'll be worth the extra money, and that you'll see and feel such a huge difference; you'll wonder what took you so long. Promise!! :)

This is the first series of the '10 tips', so check in next week for the next series!!
{UPDATE: Check out part two HERE!}

Have a terrific Thursday lovelies!
xoxo, Emily

P.S. there will be further posts in future on particular products/methods that I personally like to use, but questions are always welcome.

  1. This is such an awesome post, my hair is currently fried (over processed) Turning off the heat is SO hard though! But I have been taking prenatal vitamins and splurged on product, so I guess I'm heading in the right direction!

    1. This is really some amazing tips. though hair Extensions are the easiest way to add instant volume, thickness and length to any hairstyle but, natural hair is always is the best option for anyone, with maintaining some regular hair care routine, you can volume your hair, can get natural shiny and healthy hair.

  3. o, how i miss my pregnancy hair! my youngest will be 3 at the end of july and unfortunately after having her my hair started falling out completely. i was horrified. i also have crazy naturally curly hair so about 60 days ago i cut it all off, as much as possible without going bald and thankfully, it's growing back evenly and hasn't been falling out anymore. eeek. :) great tips! i agree with all of them, especially staying hydrated. i also have a little secret weapon i use, that i swear has been helping me with my crazy hair situation. 4. Thanks for sharing! I stopped using a lot of heat on my hair last summer and I can totally tell a difference. When I do use heat, I use a heat protectant. I never thought about water intake having an effect on the hair -- when I read that I thought "duh!" ha! All the more reason to bump up my water intake.

  6. Great advice!

I actually never dyed my hair until four years ago and I have kept it dyed ever since. I have always had a frizz problem that no product could take care of, but when I started dyeing my hair, the frizz went completely away and my hair looks so much better! I am concerned though because I feel like it's going to come back and bite me eventually...

I have never thought about putting the hair dryer on cool! I only dry my bangs most of the time and I'm sure cool air would be just fine!

Great tips! I can't wait to hear the rest.

  9. I read your post last night and this morning I decided to give the no heat thing a try. I was do scared about letting my hair air dry and the frizzy no volume mess I was sure was going to follow. I am here to tell you I have never had such a great hair day before! It's shiny and silky! It turns out the blow dryer was causing all of my frizz!! Why had no one told me this before! Thanks Em! I can't wait for more tips. I'd love to see your night bun. Is that how you get your curls?

  11. My hair has gotten so long I almost don't know what to do with it. I definitely found that putting it up in a bun protects it overnight and even during the day. Twirling it around, with product if you need, will give you a bit of bounce when it's unravelled. I'll be sharing this post :)

  12. You might have the most gorgeous hair I've ever seen! Unbelieveable. I'm in this 'my-hair-can't-grow-out-fast-enough' stage. Ugh.... I just want it long right now!! I miss the long locks. ;) great tips. Sign me up for prenatal vitamins! Haha...

  15. So what products do you use, then?

  16. Its nice to see that a blogger has long natural color hair, with no extension!!! I love long hair and have been growing mine out for awhile. After years of dying it and hating my natural color(since highschool 10 years ago) I decided to just let it be its natural color, and what do ya know, I get more compliments on it being my natural color then I ever did with it being dyed! Now if I can only get it to grow a little longer! I use Biotin, for those women looking for a non-prenatal vitamin and do a coconut treatment on my hair once a month. I'm highly considering doing no heat like you suggest!

  19. Hi what hair color is very similar to yours? I'm a fan of your hair color, and since it's your natural one I cant copy it exactly, so can you tell me which dye color is the closest to yours?

  20. Hello! Just started reading your blog, so I have tons of content to go through! Quick question: what are your drying techniques? If I bun my hair damp at night it's still wet in the morning (and I end up with a bit of a sore throat). Am I doing something wrong? Or are there other non bun techniques?
